Independent Study Options

Independent Study at Buena Vista High School offers students a personalized, flexible learning experience that allows them to progress at their own pace while still meeting academic standards. This program is designed for students who thrive in a self-directed environment and are capable of managing their time and assignments independently. Independent Study at Buena Vista High School empowers students to take control of their education while receiving the support and resources necessary for success.

Key Features of Independent Study

  • Personalized Learning: Students work closely with a teacher or advisor to design a curriculum tailored to their individual needs, interests, and academic goals.

  • Flexible Scheduling: The program provides flexibility for students to complete coursework on their own time, outside the traditional classroom setting. This is especially beneficial for students who may need to balance school with other responsibilities.

  • Self-Discipline and Accountability: Independent study emphasizes the development of strong time management and organizational skills. Students are responsible for managing their coursework, meeting deadlines, and seeking help when needed.

  • Teacher Support: While students work independently, they receive ongoing support from their teacher or advisor. Regular check-ins, feedback, and academic guidance ensure students stay on track and have access to the resources they need.

  • Variety of Courses: Independent study options are available in a range of subjects, including core academic courses (such as English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) and elective courses. Students may also have the opportunity to pursue enrichment subjects or explore topics of personal interest.

Eligibility

Independent Study is available to students who demonstrate the ability to work independently and maintain focus on their academic goals. The program is ideal for students who may have non-traditional schedules, such as those involved in extracurricular activities or facing unique personal circumstances. Students must obtain a referral from their school counselor, administrator, or in some cases through student services in order to attend the Independent Study program.

Benefits of Independent Study:

  • Academic Progression: Students can progress through courses at a faster pace or take additional courses that may not be available in a traditional classroom setting.

  • Skill Development: Students develop critical skills such as self-motivation, responsibility, and time management, which are essential for success in both higher education and future careers.

  • College and Career Readiness: Independent Study provides students with the tools to become lifelong learners and prepares them for future academic and professional pursuits.
